JT’s dividend yield is 5.7%!

Curious About JT’s Dividend Yield

JT, Japan Tobacco Inc. (2914), a high-dividend stock that was frequently discussed last year, is trading at 261,650 yen for 100 shares as of January 3.With an annual dividend of 15,000 yen, the dividend yield comes to 5.

7%. Since the price reached 2,481 yen per share at the end of last year, if you were able to buy at the year-to-date low, the yield would have been

6.0%

… Well, I suppose very few people were actually able to buy at that price (^^;

How does it compare to overseas tobacco stocks?

However, given the ongoing global stock market slump, among international stocks, BTI (British American Tobacco) offers a yield of 8.32%.

and PM (Philip Morris International) offers a yield of 6.71%.

I think U.S. stocks clearly offer better yields and better shareholder returns.

Since you can buy U.S. stocks starting at just one share, you can buy BTI, for example, starting at $31.79. The exchange rate plummeted yesterday, so the yen equivalent varies significantly from day to day (-_-;)

You’re saying all that—do you actually own any?

Even though I’m saying all this, the truth is… I don’t actually own any foreign tobacco stocks. In fact, I hold 200 shares of JT. Why is that?

Simply because I didn’t know about U.S. stocks (^▽^;)

. So, moving forward, I’ll be learning about U.S. stocks little by little and buying them as I go.

While I’m drawn to U.S. stocks, I also plan to keep buying familiar Japanese stocks.

By the way, I bought my JT shares last summer for 2,996 yen each. The dividend yield is 5%. Since I’ve been steadily buying them with

monthly deposits, whenever the market drops like this and I have some spare cash, I find myself screaming “Aaaaaaaah!” from the center of my futon.
